Will BITCOIN Cause the Next Depression ??

By Aalina Arroyave

If you’re into American society today, you’ve probably heard of Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a new currency that was created in 2009 by an unknown person using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto. Transactions are made with no banks involved. Bitcoin can be used to book hotels on Expedia, shop for furniture on Overstock and buy Xbox games. But much of the hype is about getting rich by trading it. The price of bitcoin skyrocketed into the thousands in 2017. People use bitcoin for a number of reasons. Some are to buy merchandise anonymously, international payments are easy and cheap because bitcoins are not tied to any country or subject to regulation. Small businesses also are interested in them because there are no credit card fees. Some people just buy bitcoins as an investment, hoping that they’ll go up in value. People can send bitcoins to each other using mobile apps or their computers. It’s similar to sending cash digitally. This is similar to another app craze, cash app. According to CoinDesk.com it states “Bitcoin’s most important characteristic is that it is decentralized. No single institution controls the bitcoin network. It is maintained by a group of volunteer coders, and run by an open network of dedicated computers spread around the world.” This proves that bitcoin attracts individuals and groups that are uncomfortable with the control that banks or government institutions have over their money. These groups of people are quite a handful, so bitcoins popularity has gone up meaning it’s worth a lot. However, there are some downsides to bitcoin. According to forbes.com it states “Many of my colleagues who have tried living off bitcoin for even a week have come back to tell me that it’s extremely risky and mostly unrewarding. The best way to use bitcoin, therefore, is to invest and trade”. This portrays how Bitcoin is not really monitored the way it should be so there are some risks if you’re looking to use it as one source. Although, it’s a great way to invest and trade. In a recent interview by Sean Illing – https://www.vox.com/conversations/2018/4/11/17206018/bitcoin-blockchain-cryptocurrency-weaver , its proven that bitcoin can be pretty expensive. This article stated “If I want to buy something with Bitcoin, I don’t like that the price is bouncing up and down either. So I have to turn my dollars into Bitcoins and then do the transaction, and that is a remarkably costly process. That, in my opinion, is not a system that works.” This is showing how people have recently experienced shakey prices with bitcoin when they are interested in purchasing something. Since they don’t have enough bitcoins they turn their actual money into bitcoin which can overwhelming be costly. This is also some of the reason as to why Bitcoin’s popularity has gone down. Not to mention, one of the most well known and popular banks such as Chase bank has gotten in some heat with Bitcoin users. Very recently, JP Morgan has gotten sued for Bitcoin fraud. The bank put the kibosh on credit card purchases for cryptocurrencies earlier this year when it also sparked controversy by treating crypto purchases as cash advances, the latter of which command higher fees. This process would command higher fees which meant people were getting charged more. The plaintiff claimed he was charged 140$ in fees and other requirements which is considered illegal since JP Morgan was supposed to protect his account from “unfair billing credit”. This led him to sue for 1 million dollars, however this case is still open and yet to be solved.

Cellphones at the Dinner Table

By Gabriella Camacho

For years, starting from when phones like the iPhone 4 came out, people have been so addicted to their phones. Some people even argue that nowadays, our phones are making us more self-absorbed. We carry our phones with us throughout the day, most of the time, but at the dinner table, it can be a problem.

Having our cellphones at the dinner table is a big problem because it can come off as rude or disrespectful. When you’re at the dinner table, it is a time to enjoy food with the family and engage in conversations, rather than just sitting there on your cellphone. It can come off as rude because it looks like you’re not paying attention, or ignoring the other person who might be trying to have a conversation with you. It can also look like you’re just not interested in what the other person has to say and you would rather be on your phone, then listen to them. In a study from researchers at Virginia Tech, it is said that just because of phone isn’t physically present, “Individuals are more likely to miss subtle cues, facial expressions, and changes in the tone of their conversation partner’s voice, and have less eye contact” this shows that phones have an affect on people, and its better to just not use it at the table.

From this information, it can be concluded that people are better off not using their phones at the dinner table. Not only will this show the other person at the table respect, but it also good because you are taking a break from constantly looking on your phone, and surfing the internet. With you starting conversations, listening, and paying attention to what others have to say, it could potentially bring you closer together and make you want to spend more time with each other. Overall, not using your cellphones at the dinner table is beneficial, and it is the better way to go.

Only Boys Can…

By Nayamelle Gomez

Growing up, I’ve always hated the color pink. Odd right. A young girl hating the color pink? Well that’s absurd. I never knew why but I just did. I always wanted to play the sporty games with the boys. I always wanted to compete with them. But no. Don’t pair me up with a girl that likes pink. She won’t know how to play. She doesn’t know how to play cause she’s a girly girl. Girly girls don’t know how to compete or play the games the boys played. This was my mindset at such a young age. I was forced to only express my feminine side that I grew to hate it because the boys were taught that if they expressed their feminine side ,they  wouldn’t  praised  as much. Or applauded as much as the boys that do show their masculine side. And I wanted to be applauded, I wanted to be the spotlight and the center of attention. And to accomplish this, I had to became as masculine as I could. This was exhibit A) of the many problems of misogyny.

Most boys and girls get taught at such a young age, that certain things are meant for girls and others for boys. The girls get punished and talked to when they play with cars. The boys get screamed at for wearing dresses. Girls are taught to act lady like. Don’t speak if you’re not spoken to. Don’t laugh to loud or smile too big. Don’t play with your brothers’ toys, you’re a girl. Boys are taught that boys will be boys and their femininity is a curse. Play with action figures and play sports. You don’t like playing dress up, that’s for girls. Do you like a girl? Hit her. It’ll show you like her a lot.

This is an issue. Girls are forced to hide any sign of “masculinity” they posses’ and boys are shown that being feminine is weak. Adults are the cause of this. They start to teach their children young which then result into long term issues. Because of the engraved misogyny in many boys’ mind, as they grow into men, they get a much more difficult time opening up. This results in not being able to obtain mature and stable relationships because the man is most likely afraid to open up. Now for girls, being taught be lady like demonstrates to young girls that it’s up to the man to do all the heavy lifting, like work etc. Masculinity is praised while femininity is stepped on. Girls observe how’s the boys get most of the praise so then they start distancing themselves from heir feminine side. Just as how the boys are taught, girls start thinking that to get the attention the boy gets, they need to distance themselves from their “girly” side.

“Parents and adults. Teach your children that being feminine or masculine is great. Teach them that the other isn’t wrong and it’s just as great as the other. Teach your children to be happy with who and how they express themselves. It will be worth it. Set your misogyny aside and teach your children to be whoever they desire to be. Teach them to love.”- Arash Mansour

Why We Shouldn’t Bring Extinct Species Back to Life!

By Maya Guerrero

The thought of bringing species back to life, also known as De-Extinction has been boggled between many individuals in today’s society. If you’re not familiar with the term ‘de extinction’, it’s where conservation biologists would take animals that have left this Earth for various reasons and put them under process that would ‘magically’ bring them back on this Earth.Even though this idea is extremely cool for obvious reasons, this should NOT happen for the following reasons. We, the people are one of the main reasons for species going extinct, how do we know for sure that we won’t be again? Secondly with this process comes with necessities needed for research about the process which also means financial issues and lastly it’s even highly unlikely to occur anyways.

De-extinction should not occur by any means! According to Carl Zimmer, an author, he states in his article “Bringing Them Back To Life” it states “…And especially in recent years we humans were the ones who wiped them out, by hunting them, destroying their habitats, or spreading diseases.” In other words, we shouldn’t make those species go through the harsh conditions we put them through once again. This is one of the many reasons why we definitely shouldn’t undergo this process because they are going to suffer the spreading of illnesses and the destruction of their habitat.

If we do decide to bring back animals that have officially gone extinct, it would just bring problems along the way. As stated in the article “ that was written by Stuart Pimm “The “Case Against Species Revival” “The second political problem involves research priorities. I work with very poor people in Africa, Brazil, and Madagascar. Rich only in the diversity of life amid which they eke out their living, they generate no money for my university.”If de-extinction occurs , we would have to fish our money that we don’t have at all at the moment. Mind you, we are still in great debt with China. Should we focus on these important issues in our society or finding useless ways to bring back certain animals that we could possibly make them extinct again?

Finally, the last reason as to why we shouldn’t bring back species that are known now for being extinct is because the likelihood of such event happening is very low. As demonstrated in “The Case Against De- Extinction: It’s a Fascinating but Dumb Idea”

“De-extinction thus seems far fetched, financially problematic, and extremely unlikely…”, Paul R. Ehrlich said. Although this would be an AWESOME idea and experience to touch many species that we know have brought brought back from the dead, it’s just simply not worth it. For one, it drags very sensitive issues. Also, we could spend money that we can’t afford to lose, as we are ‘swimming in debt’,and have the operation not even work. All that hard earned money would be ‘down the drain’.

Thusly, reviving extinct animals isn’t such a good idea and, as stated in my introduction to this article, here’s a breakdown as to why. First, how many we as humans make sure that we won’t make the species go back to permanently leaving this planet? (SPOILERS: We can’t!) Secondly along with this operation follows a list of problems especially financial ones. And lastly, it’s not even highly likely, biologists could even pull off this process known as “De- Extinction”.

Should Companies Be Able to Track Customers Preferences Without Permission?

By TarQuan Arthur- Johnson

No companies should not be granted access to customers shopping or other related preferences without permission. This is considered to be an “invasion of privacy” for customers data being collected.

However, there are some valid points that aid companies should retrieve your shopping habits. Found in the article ‘EyeSee You and the Internet of Thing’ it says “ mannequins allows storekeepers to track, age, gender, and race of customers”. This quote shows by allowing companies to gather information of your lifestyle provides them them with certain information to provide you with your needs without making you go through a hassle. But, with this said companies receive some irrelevant information of you that is private. So, the other side of this argument may have have some good points but not enough.

RFID invades your own privacy. According to ‘Do Customers have a Right to Privacy from RFID’, “ active RFID tag enters the home, any information gathered, including information from winter jacket, immediately offends the principles of privacy”. This quote shows RFID tags collects unnecessary information of what you wear even inside your home, which goes far beyond the boundary line of privacy. Thus, proving companies should not invade your personal privacy without permission.

In addition, cell phone carriers invade your privacy as a customer. In article ‘Cell Phone Carrier Marketing Techniques are an Invasion of Privacy’ it says “ she turns off her GPS when she is not using it. She also clears her browsing history … I think its an invasion of privacy”. This shows even customers are uneasy about cell phone companies methods to obtain information of them. To go as far as a tracking customers where abouts at any given time make customers uncomfortable and can be used for the wrong purposes. So yes companies are invading you personal privacy.

Overall, companies should not access customers shopping habits or lifestyles. For many reasons like, RFID tags violate principles of privacy, cell phone companies obtain too much information of customers, and EyeSee mannequins acquire data of you without you even knowing. This brings us full circle on why companies should not be privileged to access your personal privacy.

Texting and Driving

By Sarah-Louise Baldwin

Almost a half million people are injured or killed in traffic accidents attributed to the combination of texting and driving yearly in the United States. The statistics are staggering, especially in consideration of the fact that this danger could be completely avoided. According to statistics compiled by the Department of Transportation, in 2013, 3,154 people died and another 424,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes consisting of drivers who were distracted by their cell phones- mostly by texting. The United States far surpasses other countries for accidents as a result of cell phone use.

In the United States, 69% of drivers from ages 18 to 64 admitted to using their cell phone while driving. Compared to European statistics in which 29% of people admitted to a similar misconduct, the United States is significantly higher. Our country’s lead in cell phone distractions while driving is nothing to be proud of. Statistically, within your life, someone you love will be involved in a serious car accident as a result of cell phone usage.

Despite the shockingly high percentage of people who admit to participating in this life-threatening activity, this problem is on which is simple to avoid. All cellphones have a “Silence” option, which allows phone to transmit no sound and won’t give driver’s the temptation to check their phone any time they hear a chime, buzz, or bing. IPhones also now sport a “Do Not Disturb While Driving” options, during which time a phone is on complete silence with no vibrations. Lastly, for driver’s who simply have no self control and aren’t able to avoid the temptation of picking up their phone while on the road, a simple solution is to place the cellphone into the glove compartment box. Here, the phone is secure with no chance of being lost or damaged, as well as minimizing the temptation to use it- out of sight, out of mind.

There is no excuse for using your cellphone while driving. If you do not have enough consideration for your own safety to resist the need to use your phone, then take into consideration the lives of those around you. Not being alert while driving can cause many accidents and devastates hundreds of thousands of families each year. No one wants to lose a loved one simply because you couldn’t pull over to respond to that text.

SHOULD STUDENT ATHLETES GET PAID? NO! Here’s Why!

 By Maya Guerrero

Whether or not athletes that attend school should get paid, has been a controversial topic for a very long time. But there’s a clear answer: no. This claim is supported by the following reasons. For starters, the school already supplies student athletes with free equipment needed for the sport, they are already being paid with an athletic scholarship, and lastly student athletes are even being paid for traveling anywhere in the world. Why would you need an additional salary added to all these wonderful benefits? (this is all supported by the same article)

If you didn’t know already, i’ll spill the tea”for y’all. There’s been an issue going around lately and that’s whether college athletes should get paid. But there’s a clear cut answer and that’s no! The students are already given necessities for the sport why add to that? Is that not good enough? According to Zarl Dirlam he states “Athletic scholarships cover just about everything a student athlete needs to survive for four years at a major university. Campus housing, daily medical care and free meals via training table are all included.” These athletes are getting all this in advance for all four years. So why should they have something additional?

An athletic scholarship is given to athletes that play for their school. There shouldn’t be an additional salary added to this. As persuasively said in the article “There’s No Crying In College: The Case Against Paying College Athletes” “College athletes are already being paid with an athletic scholarship that’s worth between $20-50,000 per year.” Unlike other students who aren’t given the money to study, these students are ‘hand given’ the money. The financial burden is taken off from both their parents and themselves while others struggle to come up with the money.

Last but not least, the scholarships that are handed to college athletes even allow the students to travel. As demonstrated in the article written by Zarl Dirlam “Traveling around the world is another privilege these student-athletes are afforded…” If these students are afforded this, then there is no reason as to why the need to get paid.(Also there have been accounts of student athletes that have traveled using the scholarship that they were given, and totally ruining America’s representation. They have acted immature which leds to another reason why they shouldn’t get paid under any circumstances whatsoever. If colleges are paying student athletes that are behaving like this, what does that show about the college? That they support bad inappropriate behavior. This makes America and those colleges look bad on their side. Oh and I forgot to mention, most student athletes also tend to take all these benefits for granted

unfortunately. So why feel the need to add to their salary, if the majority is not going to appreciate it to the fullest?

In conclusion we should absolutely not pay a penny to student athletes. It’s obviously that there is way to many ‘cons’ than ‘pros’ in this situation. It’s known that the school already supplies student athletes with free equipment needed for the sport, they are already being paid with an athletic scholarship.

Are Concerts Safe Anymore?

By Aalina Aroyave

Concerts are supposed to be a fun, exhilarating, and music filled enjoyment event. However, with these recent attacks people are questioning their safety. For example, on May 22nd wrapped up her show with an encore of the single “Dangerous Woman,” that elation quickly turned to horror. At around 10:30 p.m. local time, as hundreds of fans were streaming from the cavernous venue to the nearby train station, a terrorist detonated an improvised explosive device, seriously injuring more than 59 people and killing 22, including an 8-year-old named Saffie Rose Roussos. It’s sad to see that our world has turned violent, especially when innocent children who just wanted to see their idol sing, have to suffer from this. The attacks was by 22-year-old British native Salman Abedi on behalf of the Islamic State. People seriously do not feel safe anymore with allowing them or their children to go to concerts which not only can affect them but other celebrities. Since people don’t feel safe, they will most likely not want to go to any other celebrities concerts’ anymore which can ultimately shut down tours. This takes a toll on a celebrities income as well since people won’t be paying to see them anymore. In order to avoid this, America should have a stronger security system to avoid these problems.

CELL PHONES IN RESTAURANTS

By: Leann Portillo

When was the last time you sat in a restaurant and had your cell phone in your bag or pocket the whole time? A while ago right? That’s because our generation is dependent on that small square piece of technology we hold our dear lives on to. Whether it be texting a friend back, scrolling through twitter, or Snapchatting the food at the table, our generation can’t seem to go to a restaurant without putting these phones down.

I admit it, I don’t remember the last time I went to a restaurant and kept my phone in my bag the ENTIRE TIME. Our generation is so used to having our phones out at the table while waiting for the food to come. Instead of staring at screens for the 15 minutes waiting for your food, why not speak to one another at the table? Research shows that our generation will be staring at screens for 85% of the rest of our lives. We wake up and watch the news on the TV, check our cell phones for any messages or calls, look at the gps screen while driving, staring at computer screens in school and more. Almost our entire lives will be spent looking at screens. So why not take that 15 minutes of life and use it to interact with the people you love? Within those 15 minutes talk about life and how everything is going. Whenever my cousins and I go out as an entire group, we vow to put all out phones in the middle of the table and arent allowed to touch them till we leave. This tactic allows for interaction and speaking, like the way life was before communicating through devices. Yes, technology and cell phones have made communication easier, but did it make it better? People text more than speak about things in real life.

What is the lesson here? We must start interacting and communicating more and put the phones away. I hate eating at a restaurant with my friends and seeing them all on their phones. Yes we could snap selfies and videos of us, but afterwards, putting the phone down and just vibing with one another is the best thing to do! Next time you are eating out with friends or family or your significant other, think about how life is too short to be staring at screens, stare at each other and speak!

Drunk Driving

By Aalina Aroyave

When an intoxicated individual makes a decision to sit behind the wheel of an automobile and drive home, he endangers everyone on the road. This one decision, which may not seem important at the time, can have a crucial impact on other people in his surrounding. When the choice whether or not to drive under the influence of alcohol faces a person, he often does not realize the consequences of his actions, and therefore makes an extremely uneducated decision. Drunk driving is one of the most controversial issue or world faces today. Most of the debate is over whether or not increasing fines for drunk driving offenders will play a significant part in the cutting down of driving under the influence. However, while stiffer DUI laws will look affective on paper, they will not make a substantial step in the fight against drunk driving. In a recent article https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20180411/p2g/00m/0dm/059000c by The Mainichi Japan, a U.S MArine was sentenced to 4 years in prison and hard labor for DUI and killing a 61 year old man. Typically, prison over there is more harsh than the U.S so this man will face great suffrage. DUI violaters are no joke and stricter measures should be taken to stop this crisis. The only measure that has been taken is raising the DUI fine. The only benefit of increased drunk driving fines is that it goes to the law enforcement agency that collects the fines. The government finds ways to make money, and this is one of their ways. The government should be finding more logical ways to end drunk driving. Innocent children have been getting killed due to one’s intoxicated self which is morally wrong. Another article by https://www.denverpost.com/2018/04/10/timothy-amos-merritt-drunken-driving-prison/  wrote about how a man who had four DUI’s had killed his very close friend. The government should’ve already taken action the first time around instead of putting more people in danger which led to an innocent man’s death. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to 24 years in prison. The article clearly stated “In one of the cases, Merritt was arrested after he drove in the wrong direction on U.S. Highway 163”. This is showing society how not enough is done about the issue pertaining drunk driving, since this man wasn’t put in jail and had been convicted three times more after this incident. This murder could have easily been avoided however it was unfortunately not. One last current top story was when police say Saturday night at 10 p.m. an officer spotted a tan Chrysler Sebring driving erratically on southbound I-75 near Crooks. A women had been driving while drunk in the car with her 14,8, and 5 year old children. This woman not only put herself in danger, but her kids and other drivers too. Previously, she had her licence suspended several times due to these same acts. Drunk driving is a crucial issue that happens too often. Sadly, it’s the innocent ones that are taken.

LEGALIZING MARIJUANA ?

By Emelinda Moran

Why isn’t marijuana legalized? I mean, think about it, alcohol is legal, and afterall it has its bad sites like causing cancer, deaths due to overdose, and its toxic. Now, how many studies have shown that cigarettes are extremely bad for you ? Every single study. Everyone knows the outcomes of cigarettes; lung cancer, respiratory system problems, and god knows what else. It’s basically a cancer stick as most would call it. So why is it that cigarettes and alcohol are legal but not marijuana ?

Marijuana Amazing Outcomes

To start off, Marijuana has been proven to change the medical industry. For example, it can slow down and kill cancer cells while slowing down the tumor growth , it can stop HIV from spreading, can slow down the Progression of Alzheimer’s and assist with PTSD & Mental Health. For many people Medicinal Cannabis combats Depression, Anxiety & ADHD. The invention of marijuana was primarily from China when they cultivated it for therapy and recreation over 4,700 years ago. It may also help with basic health issues, like migraines and glaucoma. It’s down a difference in the medicine life of today but you can’t ignore the simple facts as to its downsides. It’s only a matter of time until they finally legalize it everywhere. It’s been legalized in over 30% of the World. Sooner or later we’ll be next.

Evidence

There has been evidence showing that marijuana reduces chemotherapy for cancer patients which is good. Chemotherapy drains your energy, your hair, your appetite and way more. According to scientificamerican.com it states “Numerous trials have indicated that medical marijuana increases appetite and reduces chemotherapy-related nausea in the short term. “ Therefore it increases their ability to eat and not starve because it creates an appetite for them.

As well as evidence that it prevents alzheimer’s. According to lifehack.org it states “THC, the active ingredient present in marijuana slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, a 2006 study led by Kim Janda of the Scripps Research Institute found out. THC slows the formation of amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme in the brain that makes them.” This presents how there was a proven case and study that proves that medical marijuana prevents and slows down the progression of alzheimer’s, which is amazing considering 1 in 1010 people in the world have it and the population of the world is approximately 8 billion.

Lastly there was a study considering that marijuana controlled seizures. According to lifehacks.org it states “Robert J. DeLorenzo, of Virginia Commonwealth University, gave marijuana extract and synthetic marijuana to epileptic rats. The drugs stopped the seizures in about 10 hours. It is found out that the THC controlled the seizures by binding the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation.” Many human based studies are tried on animals first, preferebally rats. There has to be more studies drawn considering this was made in 2003, but there is an 80% chance that it does stop seizures.

This app concludes to the facts that marijuana should be legalized for the benefit of medical needed people. Many people have health issues that can easily be cured if it was legal. Yes, medical marijuana is a thing. But it is also very rare to get a prescription. And others can’t afford it. They can buy it off the street for a more convenient price to save a life.

Pros and Cons of a Locker

By: Ashli Harvin

Are lockers a good idea for students? Believe it or not there is a debate on whether school lockers are beneficial or not so much. Physically a locker is much better for students who carry around extremely heavy backpacks as well as other personal belongings such as musical instruments, sports equipment or other learning materials for five days a week. It has been found that student’s backpacks on average exceed 10% of their body weight. It has also been recently reported that on average the weight of a school bag is around 13-15 pounds. A pro of having  school lockers would be that students would be able minimize the amount of stress put onto their backs, helping to prevent the rise of back pain reported by kids today. “Every fall, pain from heavy backpacks is among the most frequent juvenile injuries brought to orthopedists. (Almost as frequent as high school sports injuries.)” – https://www.coastalorthoteam.com/blog/backpacks-and-back-pain-in-children-and-school

Another pro for having a locker is a sense of having security for your belongings. Students can’t be with their school bags and belongings all times during the day. There is always going to be the possibility of leaving school bags on the side as they play sports or any activity leaving their valuables exposed and at risk for someone taking their belongings. On these occasions what is there to prevent the theft of the valuable items that student carry around with them today such as mobile phones, music devices and money? A locker would provide a secure place to keep personal belongings, taking the worry of someone stealing from students and parents.

“Movies and television shows about high schools may still feature students decorating lockers — or being shoved into them — but in the real world, lockers have all but been abandoned. The trend has expanded so rapidly and widely that schools are now removing individual student lockers from their hallways, and builders and designers for many new high schools don’t even include them in their plans.  So, why the change? Anyone with a high schooler in their orbit knows that students now want everything they own with them all of the time. Books, phones, water bottles, headphones, laptops, tablets, snacks, coats, extra shoes. Where students used to swap out textbooks between classes, they now navigate the halls bent over by jam-packed backpacks like Himalayan Sherpas shuffling along without a base camp. This carryall approach probably ensures a steady stream of patients for chiropractors, and it bewilders parents who don’t understand why their kids can’t just use an assigned locker to store their stuff.  For most students, the issue is time and convenience. Today’s students may be unaware of the role of the locker in high school lore, but for earlier generations, the news of its impending disappearance is cause for nostalgia.  The locker, after all, was an integral part of growing up, a place to show you were responsible for yourself and for your things. It was where students learned that combination locks opened in sequence of left-right-left (or was it right-left-right?). It was where love notes were surreptitiously deposited (and less surreptitiously pored over). It was where drug dealers hid their stash (seldom successfully) and boys asked girls to the prom (before that became a full-scale production). It was an extension of yourself.  Not anymore.”  -www.washingtonpost.com

Lockers also come with a downfall. Lockers can be quite expensive to buy and install, and could have a major impact on a schools budget. Sure they last a long time, but the cost can be quite draining for private and charter schools. If some schools were to have a few hundred students, the money that goes into the payment of lockers could go towards something else. Things such as more books, electronics, sports equipment or anything expensive that always isn’t in supply.  But the benefits lockers provide to students would outweigh the cost. Nowadays with school shootings, gang influence and drugs, students can now put more than just books in their locker. Guns, heavy drugs and other harmful things can now be easily hidden inside, a locker doesn’t just become a location for books and other academic materials anymore. If we all want our kids to be safe, removing lockers can solve this potentially life-threatening issue.

What do you think about this debate? Do you think that school lockers are a good thing and should be the norm across our schools, or do you disagree? Let us know your opinion.

Teen drug abuse is skyrocketing !!
Maya Guerrero & Angelo Herrera

Teens nowadays use drug and other substances more commonly. This is shown through the following websites, www.abovetheinfluence.com, www.therecoveryvillage.com, and www.drugabuse.gov. Teens alcohol use is high, Teens smoke marijuana and it becomes a habit later in life, Vaping is common with high school students.  Teen drug abuse is rising dramatically. However, some drugs are not used as much as others. For instance, in www.drugabuse.gov it states,” Five-year trends, however, did reveal an increase in LSD use among high school seniors, although use still remains lower compared to its peak in 1996.” This indicates that certain drugs like LSD are not used common by teens and are low surveyed. But other drugs such as marijuana and more are abused by young adolescents.

Teen alcohol use is extremely high. A high percentage of teens are harmed while under the influence of alcohol. For example, on www.abovetheinfluence.com it states, ” Each year, approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking. This includes about 1,900 deaths from car accidents, 1,600 homicides, 300 suicides, and hundreds of other deaths due to accidents like falls, burns and drownings.” This indicate young adolescence with alcohol additions are more likely to be hurt badly that can even lead to their death. This contributes to the claim because the rate of teens being injured while drinking alcohol is high.

Teens who smoke marijuana are more likely to obtain addictive habits later in life. Teens who begin to smoke marijuana are eager to ingest more of it. For example,on www.therecoveryvillage,com it states, “According to experts, around 13% of people who start smoking pot as teenagers become dependent on it.” This indicated that teens that smoke weed have the urge to smoke more weed. This portrays a claim of Teens nowadays use drug and other substances more commonly because teens who start any type of drug, crave the drug whenever they don’t have it.

Vaping is common with high school students. High percentage of students have reportedly vaped or commonly do it. For example, on www.drugabuse.com it states, “Past-year vaping was reported by 13.3 percent of 8th graders, 23.9 percent of 10th graders, and 27.8 percent of 12th graders. Vaping was the third most common form of substance use in high school seniors and 10th graders (after alcohol and marijuana) and the second most common among 8th graders (after alcohol).” This indicates that the majority of students vape. Which makes vaping the third most common drug. This support the claim because a survey showed that a high rate of students vape, which make it common.

One of the many reasons as to why teen drug abuse is on the rise is because it’s available to children without anyone even realizing it. According to aforeverrecory.com it states “The availability of drugs and alcohol impacts the rate of abuse. Certain substances are easy for teenagers to obtain and abuse without taking major risks with the authorities.” This shows how the availability is the real cause of the increase of drug abuse by teens because they have no circumstances with major authorities.

To follow the paragraph above more evidence is shown on aforeverrecovery.com. It states “ In many cases, the drugs that are on the rise are the easiest to find and obtain. In states where marijuana is legal for medical purposes, teenagers can find the drug in similar ways as any other prescription.” In other words this shows how drug abuse for teenagers are on the rise because when these laws are made of legalizing marijuana for medical use they are oblivious to other things they can be used for in a negative aspect including teen drug abuse.

The common thing teens do these days are drugs. This is proven by www.abovetheinfluence.com, www.therecoveryvillage.com, www.aforeverrecovery.com and in www.drugabuse.gov. Teens are most likely to vape, Teens who smoke weed are more likely an addict in the future, and teens alcohol use is extremely high.

DON’T GIVE TOO MUCH HOMEWORK TEACHERS!!!

By Maya Guerrero

Large amounts of homework both counter intuitive and truly destroying students little by little. Students are shown to lose their social life over too much homework. However, it has some “pros” such as getting students ready for college and more. If too much homework is being given out, it’s not productive for the students, and lastly it could ruin students school opportunities in the later. Although more evidence proves that large sums of work that’s assigned to students is neither understood by students but also not good for students health there are some evidence that prove otherwise. According to today.duke.edu it says “Beyond achievement, proponents of homework argue that it can have many other beneficial effects. They claim it can help students develop good study habits so they are ready to grow as their cognitive capacities mature.” A lot of homework is equal to more mature students and college-ready students since the workload they are getting is similar to the workload they will be receiving in college, and lastly the large amounts of homework won’t be new to them. So even though it’s not all that easy now, it’s beneficial to them in the long run. Its undoubtedly clear that too much homework can be harmful to students. This is proven by the article www.stanford.edu it states “Less time for friends, family and extracurricular pursuits: Both the survey data and student responses indicate that spending too much time on homework meant that students were “not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills in some sections,” according to the researchers. Students were more likely to drop activities, not see friends or family, and not pursue hobbies they enjoy.” This clearly proves my claim because this shows how the amount of homework can affect many students negatively causing them to become isolated since they have so much homework to do, or even not being about to partake in after school activities that can be beneficial to the student. Too much homework equals no usefulness. As also demonstrated in www.standford.edu it writes “Pope and her colleagues found that too much homework can diminish its effectiveness and even be counterproductive.” There’s no point in giving homework anyway if it’s not of any value. The children aren’t having a good understanding of it. They even think that it’s not productive, so why give that much homework? Too much homework is not beneficial to students at all. On www.nytimes.com it says “ That’s a scenario that is likely to lead to more arguments, and an increased dislike of the work on the part of the child.”

This shows how the large amount of homework is counterintuitive because instead of the students actually understanding the work given for home they are just doing it with no understanding of it. Maya Guerrero 5/7/18 Too much homework isn’t beneficial to even the parents. According to www.nytimes.com it says “The researchers, from Brown University, found that stress and tension for families (as reported by the parents) increased most when parents perceived themselves as unable to help with the homework, when the child disliked doing the homework and when the homework caused arguments, either between the child and adults or among the adults in the household.” This shows how it’s not understood and liked by the parents. (How are the students are going to feel about it?) Too much homework is damaging students. As reported by www.livescience.com “ According to Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, data shows that in countries where more time is spent on homework, students score lower on a standardized test called the Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA.” Too much homework is being given out to students and this leads to low test scores. This isn’t beneficial because the low test scores can ruin school opportunities in the future. Thusly, too much homework isn’t good for students in general. It’s not good for their social life, even though it can do things like get students college ready, the homework isn’t even being understood and lastly it’s not letting students have an opportunity for school openings.
