At ten in the morning on March 14, 2018 Yonkers Montessori Academy joined the tens of thousands of students around the United States and participated in the National Student Walkout to protest against gun violence.  One act . . . one voice . . . saying “ENOUGH” by walking out of their classrooms and schools . . . putting ALL adults, especially the NRA, on notice.  The shooting in Parkland, Florida which left 17 dead at the hands of gunman Nicholas Cruz has spurred a movement . . .“to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. We need action. Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship.

  • Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school.
  • Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day.

We are not safe at school. We are not safe in our cities and towns. Congress must take meaningful action to keep us safe and pass federal gun reform legislation that address the public health crisis of gun violence. We want Congress to pay attention and take note: many of us will vote this November and many others will join in 2020.

Join us in saying #ENOUGH!”

At Yonkers Montessori Academy, a ceremony honoring the 17 victims was held organized by Iormares Rodas. Students were told to wear black or their sports jerseys and to walk out of their classrooms into the auditorium where Iomares and Dr. Rivera shared speeches about gun violence and what can be done about it. Afterwards, 17 people dressed in white to acknowledge the victims shared a quote and lit a candle.  Once this was done, the 17 people walked out of the auditorium and went outside, with students following them.

Here are some exerpts from Iomares Rodas’ speech :

“Good morning students, teachers and parents, I am Iormares Rodas. I am the Student Government President, student, but most importantly, an Eagle.  We are gathered here today in remembrance of the 17 victims of the Majory Stoneman Douglass High-School Shooting. Not only are we here in remembrance… but as one, we stand to make a difference.  Fellow Eagles, the truth of the matter is, since Columbine in 1999, schools aren’t getting any safer. School safety is the issue OUR GENERATION CAN FIX. The survivors from Marjory Stoneman have been sparking a national conversation about safety in our schools, and they’ve taken the initiative to make changes. We need to join those students by making a difference in our communities first… And then reach beyond. As students, we no longer can be bystanders when someone around us is being mistreated or bullied. To ensure a safe environment, we must follow procedures, listen to each other, understand each other, start a conversation and strive for peace!

Seniors, AS WE APPROACH 18, register to vote. Be an educated and active member of our society. BEING ABLE TO VOTE MEANS WE ARE ABLE TO VOTE FOR CHANGE. Change for what we believe in, is the change we must FIGHT FOR!  Juniors, with one more year left, what legacy will you leave behind? What difference will you make? Will you take these last moments for granted? Or come together to make peace here at YMA?  Sophomores and Freshmen, you are all capable of giving ideas and MOVING MOUNTAINS WITH JUST A LITTLE HOPE FOR A SAFER FUTURE. As you all embark on this journey of maturity, you will find strength to fight for the change you BELIEVE IN! Teachers and staff, as representative of the student body, we know that your goal is to PROTECT US AND GIVE US THE BEST EDUCATION YOU POSSIBLY CAN, so that we will be ready to place our fate in the hands of the world out there. You make sure we all go back home safe and sound to our families and YOURS at the end of the day. Thank you.  “Change doesn’t happen if you don’t start from within”.  There is no age limit for making change. We aren’t too young to speak up, and fight for our voices to be heard. I REPEAT, THERE IS NO AGE LIMIT. Those students in Parkland Florida, fighting for our voices are our age and maybe younger. The possibIlities are endless! Today is a symbolic day in our maturity. Here today, it is evident that we can take control of our future and ensure safety for all. Let’s continue to work together in our community in hopes to change many communities in this world. Thank you very much.  LET’S MAKE A DIFFERENCE ! ! ! !
